Leona Baker possesses a strong passion to assist individuals on multiple socio-economic status levels. She is extremely passionate about seeing individuals flourish through resources.
Baker, has an extensive work history which includes over 19 years within the non-profit industry directly. She has created volunteer programs, a speakers bureau, and benchmarks for women in Pennsylvania and Texas. For almost a full 5 years (2009 – 2014), she served within the Management capacity, in the Community Services Department at the largest Community Action Agency in the State of Texas. Over 65,000 people received services annually, during her tenure.
Her areas of expertise include but are not limited to: Community Outreach, Educational Consulting, Fund Development, Organizational Management, Program Development, Strategic Partnerships, Training, Volunteer Management, and Workforce Development,
She was the first manager in the history of GCCSA to create a program. The Here & Now Program for Women Seminars were extremely popular and oftentimes overflowing. Leona established the first comprehensive orientation for over 50 programs and services. Through a partnership with the City of Houston for the Commodity Food Supplemental Program and AIMS Project, many senior citizens were served.
Through a partnership with HCC, participants successfully completed a certification in the area of Electronic Health Care, Phlebotomy Technician, Patient Care Technician, EKG Technician, Teacher’s Certification and certified CDL. Due to all programmatic goals being surpassed the first quarter, the budget was increased from $250,000.00 to 1 million dollars.
As a consultant for BLS, she served in the capacity as the Director of Development and Public Relations Manager. Leona generated a total of $71,000.00 through sponsorships in 3 months for a Conversation with Dr. Maya Angelou. The revenue stream from Oct 08 – Jan 09 was $175,515.28 not including in-kind donations and all ticket sells. Her most memorable professional accomplishments to date was ensuring the Hobby Center located in Houston, TX sold out for the first time in 6 years when Dr. Maya Angelou spoke.
Leona is a proud native Philadelphian, and graduate from Overbrook High School. Houston, Texas has been home since August 2005 and remains instrumental in her professional growth and development. Determined to help meet the needs of teachers and students with disabilities, she became certified and acquired multiple certifications in the state of Texas and remains a teacher of record, community leader and small business owner.
